if your camcorder is a Sony brand, then it is not VHS. Sony never made a VHS camcorder. the small tape could be Video8, Hi8, miniDV or even Digital8. hopefully your camera still works and you have an AV cable for it. check for proper operation by connecting the AV cable to a television set. if the TV displays tape playback picture and sound, then you are good to go. Next you will need a video capture card for your computer. the least expensive would be a USB EasyCap. The capture card will come with software to generate DV-avi files. once filed on your computer then you can put on DVD for archiving or viewing assuming you have a DVD burner on the computer. If the source tape is Video8, then making a VideoCD would work as well, which only requires a CD burner.

ANALOG if your camera is nonworking, you will need to buy an adapter to use with VCR.
*If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder… or VHS-c...
You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 85.00 (comes with software), but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.
Anytime you convert analog to digital, you will lose quality, but loss of quality is better than losing all those old memories.
**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exists. This type of VHS Adapter only exists with VHS-C tape
They also make VHS to DVD recorders and they work fine for home movies that you don't want to edit. They do not work on copyrighted DVD's.

We need to know the actual model number also the small tapes, there will be writing on them maybe you could re ask the question add details with the type of tapes they are Mini-dv (new) 8mm (old) Hi8 (slightly newer) VHS-C.
the older ones will need an analogue to digital converter, they are not expensive starting at around $10.
You say that they are VHS tapes, then its probably VHS-C again you need the converter.
Hope that helps.

"small tapes" suggests to me that they are JVC in which case you need a converter.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VHS-C-JVC-45-Compact-Tape-EC-45-Camera-VHS-Adaptor-/330342604132?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ConsumerElec_VCRs&hash=item4ce9f41d64 is selling them at 12.95.
Once purchased (and an old VHS video player if you haven't got one around), locate the phono sockets on the VHS player (if it doesn't have the red/white/yellow sockets then you will need a scart to phono lead) and on your DVD recorder (I assume you have one). Connect the outputs from the VHS to the inputs on the DVD. Obviously pput a blank, recordable disc in the DVD. Press play on the VHS and record on the DVD. Once it's finished the DVD should have the recording on it - as clean as you can get without messing with a mass of software .... and not a PC anywhere!

Do a search for Easy Cap video Adapter which allows you to connect your cam via the yellow/white/red connector to a USB port on the computer, don't bother with the software that comes with it & download AVS Videorecorder & use that. I have been using mine for quite a while now & it is very good. the adapter will cost you under £20 & AVS videorecorder is a free download.

i'm pretty sure what you're looking for is an "analog to dv converter". if you google it, you'll get stuff from 140 bucks into the thousands; it depends on your budget. You'll plug your camera into the converter, and then the converter connects to your computer.
then when you're finished, you can sell it on ebay and maybe split the cost with someone.
