I have a good handheld camcorder (canon HF20), but the audio is so-so when it comes to recording loud live music. Big band jazz, which I primarily record consists of at least 25 members and many different instruments, so I need a sufficient microphone that can blend the sounds well and pick up changes in dynamic levels. The HF20 has 3.5mm jack input, but I'm also open to using an external recorder, as long as it's not too expensive.

I'm hoping not to spend over $250

Suggestions?

Zoom H1, H2, H4... but that creates an extra step at editing (synching the audio).

Or use a XLR adapter with the HF20. See BeachTek or juicedLink.

A couple of condenser mics in an "X-Y configuration" will work. See Audio Technica. Or a Stereo mic. I use an Audio Technica AT-825 - no longer made, but the AT-8022 is good and can deal with the 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo input. The Shure VP-88 is a good one, too - but XLR only. These may be outside your budget.

The Audio Technica Pro24 is nice. And the NRG Research SA-800 is pretty cool.

i love enormous band and jazz. i'm in my 30s and maximum of my friends do not pay interest to any of the former jazz. the nearest one which human beings pay interest to at paintings is tender jazz yet i don't like it cuz it sounds like elevator music. enormous band, swing, and bop are the suited. For me music has gotten worst after the 1950's and it type of appears like we do no longer have as a lot tremendous composers as we had earlier the 50s. lately, there are some pop songs which will or might want to develop into criteria yet they are in basic terms some. I desire i might want to have experienced the reliable previous days at the same time as jazz changed into king.
