Question:
Has DVD-RAM technology for digital camcorders been obsoleted?

I purchased an Hitachi digital camcorder a little over three years ago. The owners manual describes in detail how movies recorded on DVD-RAM discs can be edited on a computer with the software provided, and can also be converted into .wav format in order to be more easily shared, emailed, etc.

I have never done this as I typically have always purchased DVD-R discs (they record just fine, but can't be edited on my PC). I have been trying for the last month to find DVD-RAM discs and for the life of me I can't find them. Best Buy, Walmart, Ritz Camera, Radio Shack, etc. etc. I finally found some on a couple of obscure web sites linked with Amazon. (DVD-RW, DVD-R+ etc. discs do not work with this camcorder.)

This has left me wondering, did DVD-RAM technology become obsolete? I feel like it was a bad decision to buy this particular camcorder and the technology may have moved on to where I should upgrade.

DVD-R is not obsolete- yes they can be edited on the PC, it just takes some time, patience and being a little clever. The right program works good too!

I use Nero, you can use virtual dub mod to convert it then open it with Windows Movie Maker to edit.

Onto DVD is fine as long as its an RW you can't edit an R). If you intend to edit - it means you have to put it on the pc anyway so you might as well get a digital
