is there a program that will convert a DVR-MS vid format to a format such as MPEG, AVI, WMA etc?

I was uploading footage from my Canon HV30 and my computer saved the footages as a DVR-MS, i tried editing the program using Sony Vegas but it was unable to read the file, it kept saying "unrecognizable format" like wise with Windows Movie Maker. Does anyone know how i can changed the current format of the video to a format that is commonly recognizable to movie editing programs?
