Hi, I was just wondering how much better hd 1280x960 video resolution was than hd 640x480 video resolution. Is 640x480 only about as good as old cell phone cameras from like 4-5 years ago before smart phones took over? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two different cameras? or different settings on one camera?

Both are versions of H.264 so the frame size is only half the equation. The other half is the compression.

Look at the amount of video that can fit on a memory card, or how much an hour will use.

Cell phones at 640x480 video are highly compressed and can record an hour using 3-5 gigs or less.

1920 X 1080 HD camcorders use between 8 and 11 gigs/hour.

And good old standard def 720 X 480 DV (miniDv tape media) recorded a whopping 13 gigs/hour.

Sooooo without knowing the situation here, can't tell which is best. My guess is both are highly compressed and all things being equal, go for the bigger frame size. If you can, go for the one with the bigger data rate.

But if you are looking for quality video, stop. Do a little more homework, at least look at MiniDv (Canon ZR960 is about the last standing entry model).

1280x960 is not HD. HD uses either 1080 scan lines or 720 scan lines, never 960. Also HD is widescreen and 960x1280 is not. 720x1280 would be the closest setting for HD. 480 scan lines approximates the quality of broadcast television in the analog days. Even now, many non-network television programs are broadcast at 480x640. if the phone uses 960 scan lines it is not very smart because that size picture cannot be displayed on any television set.

1080p - the best. 1080i has more detail, but 720p 'refreshes' the picture faster, making it look a lot smoother. It's up to you which you prefer.
