How do I import videos from my camera to imovie?

I've been trying for almost an hour and I've looked it up online already several times but everything says that if I am using a usb cord it should happen automatically. There should automatically be an option that allows you to import the videos but the problem is that that option is not appearing when I plug the camera into my computer. I have done this several times before so I know its possible, its just been over a year since I did this and I can't remember how to. Please any help is appreciated!!!

You did not tell us which camera.



In Applications, find and launch Image Capture. Use it to set the default behavior when the camera is connected to the computer using USB.



I connect my MiniDV tape based camera's DV port (not USB) to the Mac's firewire port (not USB) with a firewire cable (not USB). My new Mac does not have a an actual firewire port - it has a Thunderbolt port - so I have a Thunderbolt to fire wire adapter.
