Panasonic are a good long established make, along with Canon and Sony considered major players.
If your memory card is an SD or SDHC memory card it should work on most HD camcorders.
I just bought a cheap Hitachi camcorder. I have no Blue Ray HD facility, but I needed HD so I can also use it sometimes for my work. On my laptop the picture looks good, haven't yet attached it to the TV, but it came with cables to do so directly from the camera.
It is worth noting that HD camcorders use a recently new codec H.264 AMC, which handles the large files easier without quality loss, so although an AVI format, it may not be compatible with the editing, DVD authoring software you have,if it isn't new, within the last couple of years. I downloaded a cheap conversion package to save me upgrading everything. Also HD generally is sluggish to play and work with if you have to convert back to old school AVI. So you may want to output to something smaller than HD anyway.
Having said that my camera came with simple editing/DVD authoring software, plus direct upload to You Tube, and direct TV leads. So you could do most tasks with what's in the package, (worth checking). At least you should have a future proof camera then, even if you haven't got HD now.
All cameras can be plasicy in build these days so I'd get it new, there are some great bargains out there and you'll at least have the warranty, (don't fall for any extra cover sales gimmick, as that mounts up). Best read reviews and try in a shop any you might buy. I guess the LCD is vulnerable on them all as the connections between the camera and it get worn with the opening and closing, same as a laptop, the screen often goes first.
*SD memory card refers to 'Secure Digital', not to be confused with SD as in 'Standard Definition', when referring to Standard and Hi Definition.
(These trade names sure don't make it simple!)
